BREAKING: Julian Alvarez reached verbal agreement to join….. see more

Julián Álvarez has reportedly agreed to make a sensational return to Manchester City in the January transfer window, in what would be one of the most dramatic transfers of the season.

The Argentine forward left Manchester City for Atlético Madrid in 2024 after an extremely successful spell at the Etihad Stadium, but speculation surrounding his future has continued to grow. A return to England would represent a remarkable twist in Álvarez’s career, particularly after he established himself as one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players.

According to the scenario surrounding the latest transfer reports, Manchester City have renewed their interest in bringing Álvarez back to the club and have been working behind the scenes to convince the striker that a second spell in Manchester would be the right move for his career.

Álvarez is already familiar with the demands of Pep Guardiola’s football after spending two seasons at City. During his original spell, he made 103 appearances and scored 36 goals while winning six major trophies.

His versatility was one of the biggest reasons Guardiola valued him so highly. Álvarez could operate as a traditional centre-forward, play alongside another striker, drop into midfield areas or move into wider positions. His intelligent movement and willingness to press made him particularly effective in City’s demanding system.

A potential January return would therefore not simply be about bringing back a familiar face. It could give Manchester City another elite attacking option capable of playing several positions.

The biggest question, however, would be whether Atlético Madrid would actually allow their star forward to leave.

The Spanish club have previously made their position extremely clear. Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín stated that the club did not want to sell Álvarez and indicated that even extremely large offers would not automatically change their position. Reports have also highlighted the player’s €500 million release clause.

That makes any potential January agreement extremely complicated.

Álvarez remains officially an Atlético Madrid player, and the club’s current player profile lists him as part of the 2026/27 squad.

Nevertheless, Manchester City’s interest has been genuine enough to generate significant transfer speculation. Reports in August claimed City explored the possibility of bringing their former striker back, although those reports also stated that Álvarez rejected the idea at the time.

If circumstances were to change before January, however, the situation could become one of the most closely watched transfer stories in Europe.

For City, the attraction is obvious. The club already knows Álvarez’s qualities, his personality and his ability to adapt to Guardiola’s tactical demands. Unlike a completely new signing, he would not need a lengthy period to understand the manager’s philosophy or adjust to the intensity of Premier League football.

There is also the emotional factor.

Álvarez left Manchester with an extremely strong relationship with the club and its supporters. When his transfer to Atlético Madrid was completed, City described his two-year spell as hugely successful. The Argentine himself said Manchester City would always have a special place in his heart.

That history could make a reunion particularly significant.

A return would also place Álvarez back in a squad competing for the biggest trophies in English and European football. His previous experience of winning the Premier League and Champions League with City means he would arrive with an understanding of what is required at the highest level.

For Guardiola, the possibility of having Álvarez back would provide another tactical weapon.

The Argentine can play as a No. 9 but is also comfortable dropping deeper and combining with midfielders. His movement allows him to create space for teammates while his finishing ability makes him a constant threat inside the penalty area.

Those qualities could become particularly valuable during the second half of the season, when Manchester City face a demanding schedule across multiple competitions.

The potential January move would also raise questions about City’s existing attacking options. Bringing Álvarez back would increase competition for places and could force Guardiola to make difficult decisions about his preferred attacking combinations.

Rather than relying on one fixed system, however, City could use Álvarez’s versatility to change shape depending on the opponent.

One week he could lead the attack as a central striker. Another week he could operate behind the main forward. He could also play from the right or left depending on the tactical requirements.

That flexibility is one of the reasons his potential return would generate so much excitement among City supporters.

For Álvarez himself, a return to the Premier League would represent an opportunity to write a new chapter in a story that appeared to have ended two years earlier.

His first spell at City was already filled with major achievements. He arrived from River Plate and quickly became an important member of Guardiola’s squad, contributing during City’s historic treble-winning campaign.

Since then, he has continued developing at Atlético Madrid and has become an established elite-level forward.

A second spell at Manchester City would therefore be very different from his first.

He would no longer be arriving as a promising young striker trying to establish himself in European football. He would return as an experienced international forward with Premier League and Champions League-winning experience.

The January transfer window could consequently become the stage for one of football’s biggest reunion stories.

However, Atlético Madrid’s position remains the major obstacle. Any agreement between the player and City would still need to be followed by negotiations between the clubs, unless the release clause were triggered.

For now, the idea of Álvarez returning to Manchester City should therefore be treated as a transfer scenario rather than a confirmed agreement. Recent reporting has actually pointed in the opposite direction, with Álvarez previously rejecting City’s approach.

But football transfers can change rapidly.

If City intensify their pursuit, if Álvarez changes his position and if Atlético become willing to negotiate, the Argentine could once again find himself walking through the doors of the Etihad Stadium.

And if that happens in January, it would transform one of the most fascinating transfer stories in European football into a spectacular Manchester City reunion.
