BREAKING: Seene Lammens says he regrets……see more

Senne Lammens is reportedly growing frustrated with his limited playing time for Belgium as the Manchester United goalkeeper continues to fight for a more permanent role with the national team.

Lammens has emerged as one of the most closely watched goalkeepers in Belgian football, particularly following the changes in the national-team setup. However, his international career has not always followed the straightforward path he would have wanted. Despite making a strong impression whenever given an opportunity, the 24-year-old has spent significant periods watching from the bench.

The situation has become particularly complicated because Belgium have been managing a changing goalkeeping hierarchy. Thibaut Courtois remains an important figure in the national-team picture, while Lammens has had to compete with other goalkeepers for opportunities. According to available match records, Lammens played only five of Belgium’s 14 matches in 2026, making four starts and one substitute appearance before the latest international developments.

For a goalkeeper who wants to establish himself at the highest level, regular international football is extremely important. Unlike outfield players, goalkeepers often need a sustained run of matches to build rhythm, confidence and an understanding with the defenders in front of them.

Lammens has made it clear that he wants to take advantage of every opportunity Belgium gives him. During the October international break, he was given an extended run after Courtois was unavailable, and he responded with impressive performances against Italy and France. He made six saves against Italy and five against France, demonstrating why many observers believe he deserves serious consideration in Belgium’s goalkeeping hierarchy.

Those performances have only increased the sense that Lammens wants a bigger role with the national team. Rather than simply being viewed as a goalkeeper waiting for his opportunity, he wants to become an important part of Belgium’s future.

Lammens himself acknowledged that the period after the World Cup had been difficult for him and that he had been waiting for another opportunity to play for the national team. He explained that when his chance arrived, it was important for him to take it quickly and show what he could do.

That mentality says a lot about his ambitions.

The Manchester United goalkeeper understands that opportunities at international level can disappear quickly. One poor performance can change the conversation, while a series of excellent displays can completely transform a player’s position in the squad.

His performances have therefore given him a reason to believe that he can challenge for a more established position with Belgium.

The issue is that international football does not operate like club football. At Manchester United, Lammens can build momentum through regular Premier League appearances. With Belgium, however, competition for the goalkeeper position is considerably more complicated.

The presence of Courtois has historically made the situation particularly difficult for younger goalkeepers. Courtois has been Belgium’s established number one for years, meaning opportunities for other goalkeepers have often been limited.

Lammens has nevertheless continued to push himself.

His rise has also been helped by his relationship with Belgium head coach Mark van Bommel. Van Bommel already knows Lammens well from their time together at Antwerp, where the coach trusted him despite having another established goalkeeper available.

That previous relationship could prove important as Belgium continue to assess their options between the posts. Lammens has spoken positively about Van Bommel and described their relationship as a good one, while also emphasizing that the manager maintains strong relationships with the entire squad.

For Lammens, however, good communication with the manager is only part of the equation.

He wants to play.

The goalkeeper knows that performances are ultimately what will determine his future with Belgium. He has also admitted that his position can change quickly and that he must concentrate on the things he can control.

That approach has allowed him to remain focused despite the uncertainty surrounding the national-team goalkeeper position.

There is also an intriguing battle developing for Belgium’s future number one position. Lammens is aware that Mike Penders could become a serious competitor, meaning neither goalkeeper can afford to become complacent.

Lammens has therefore been sending a clear message through his performances: whenever Belgium gives him an opportunity, he intends to make it difficult for the coaching staff to leave him out.

His recent international performances strengthen that argument.

Against Italy, he produced a clean-sheet performance as Belgium secured a 2-0 victory. He then followed it with another strong display against France despite Belgium suffering defeat. He subsequently started the 3-0 victory over Türkiye, where he again kept a clean sheet.

Those matches have given Lammens valuable experience and demonstrated that he can perform under international pressure.

However, the fact that he was subsequently left out of the starting lineup for Belgium’s later meeting with France shows that the competition remains open.

That is likely to be one of the biggest sources of frustration for a goalkeeper who believes he has done enough to earn continued opportunities.

Lammens is not simply looking for occasional appearances. His ambition is to become a key player for Belgium.

He has previously spoken about wanting to become an important member of the national team, and his recent performances have made that objective look increasingly realistic.

The challenge now is consistency.

If Lammens continues producing high-level performances for Manchester United and takes advantage of every opportunity he receives internationally, the pressure on Belgium’s coaching staff to give him a bigger role will naturally increase.

At Manchester United, he is already gaining valuable experience at the highest level. His club performances can therefore play a major role in determining his international future.

For Lammens, the message is simple: he wants to play, he wants to compete, and he wants to prove that he deserves to be more than a backup option for Belgium.

His frustration should not necessarily be interpreted as a desire to create problems within the squad. Rather, it reflects the ambition of a goalkeeper who believes he has the ability to contribute more.

International football is fiercely competitive, and Lammens understands that.

He also knows that his opportunity may not remain available forever.

With Belgium entering a new phase under Van Bommel and the national team looking toward the future, Lammens has an important opportunity to establish himself. His recent performances against some of Europe’s strongest opposition have already shown that he can handle the pressure.

Now, the biggest question is whether Belgium will give him the consistent run of matches he needs to turn those promising performances into a permanent position.

For Lammens, the answer will ultimately have to come on the pitch.

The goalkeeper appears determined to continue working, continue performing and make his case impossible to ignore. If he maintains his current level, Belgium may soon face a difficult decision over who should be their long-term number one.

For now, Lammens remains focused on his football, but his desire for greater involvement is clear. He wants to become a key figure for Belgium, and every appearance gives him another opportunity to prove that he belongs at the highest level.
