Thomas Tuchel has reportedly made it clear that Kobbie Mainoo still has more work to do before he can establish himself as a regular starter for England, with the Manchester United midfielder facing intense competition for places in the Three Lions midfield.
Mainoo remains one of England’s most highly regarded young midfielders, but his position in Tuchel’s plans has become increasingly competitive. The England manager has repeatedly demonstrated that reputation alone will not guarantee a starting place, and recent squad selections have underlined the importance of current form, consistency and tactical suitability.
Mainoo was included in Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad, but his tournament was frustrating. He failed to make an appearance during the competition and was one of only a handful of England’s outfield players not to feature.
That experience appears to have intensified the discussion around what Mainoo needs to do to become a more important player for his country.
The Manchester United midfielder has already shown that he possesses the technical ability to operate at international level. His composure in possession, ability to receive the ball under pressure and intelligence in tight areas have made him one of the most exciting young English midfielders of his generation.
However, Tuchel appears to want more.
For the England manager, being talented is only one part of the equation. Players competing for starting positions must demonstrate consistency at club level, tactical discipline, physical readiness and the ability to influence matches regularly.
Mainoo’s challenge is particularly difficult because England have several midfielders capable of playing at the highest level.
Declan Rice remains one of the central figures in the team, while Jude Bellingham continues to occupy a hugely influential role. Elliott Anderson has also emerged as an important option, while other players can compete for midfield places depending on Tuchel’s tactical setup.
That means Mainoo cannot simply rely on his reputation or his previous performances for Manchester United.
He has to force his way into the team.
Tuchel’s approach to selection has already been evident throughout his England tenure. When explaining his squad decisions, the German coach has repeatedly stressed the importance of players demonstrating their quality and form rather than expecting automatic selection.
When Mainoo was recalled in March, Tuchel described him as having been a major part of Manchester United’s positive run and said the midfielder had earned another opportunity to demonstrate what he could offer. Tuchel also emphasized that competition was open for Mainoo.
That message is significant.
It means Tuchel does not appear to have closed the door on Mainoo. Quite the opposite. The England boss clearly sees enough ability in the midfielder to keep him involved, but he wants him to take another step forward.
Mainoo therefore finds himself in an important stage of his international career.
At Manchester United, his performances under Michael Carrick have given him opportunities to develop his confidence and become more influential. Tuchel will be watching closely to see whether Mainoo can turn that club form into consistent international performances.
The midfielder’s biggest task is arguably consistency.
There have been occasions when Mainoo has demonstrated outstanding quality, controlling possession and showing remarkable calmness for a young player. But England’s midfield competition means that occasional flashes of brilliance are unlikely to be enough.
Tuchel wants players who can deliver at a high level repeatedly.
Mainoo must therefore demonstrate that he can influence games not only when Manchester United are playing well, but also when matches become difficult.
He needs to show that he can take responsibility when his team is under pressure, help control the tempo, win important duels and contribute defensively while still providing creativity in possession.
Those qualities could determine whether he eventually becomes a regular starter for England.
The situation is not necessarily a negative one for Mainoo.
In fact, the competition could help accelerate his development.
Rather than being handed a starting position simply because of his potential, Mainoo is being challenged to earn it. That can create a stronger mentality and force a young player to identify the areas of his game that require improvement.
Tuchel has already demonstrated that he is willing to make difficult selection decisions.
Cole Palmer, for example, was recalled after being left out of England’s World Cup squad, with Tuchel emphasizing that Palmer needed to produce the numbers and performances necessary to justify his place.
The same principle appears to apply to Mainoo.
The England manager wants competition throughout his squad, and Mainoo must respond to that competition.
There is also an important tactical element to the situation.
Tuchel has different midfield options available to him. Depending on the opponent, he can select players who provide defensive security, physicality, ball progression, creativity or attacking penetration.
Mainoo’s ability to operate in several roles could ultimately become one of his biggest advantages.
But versatility can also create a problem if he does not establish a clearly defined identity.
Mainoo must convince Tuchel exactly what he brings to the England midfield.
Is he the player who controls possession?
Is he the midfielder who carries the ball forward?
Can he play as a deeper midfielder alongside Rice?
Can he operate higher up the pitch?
Can he provide enough defensive intensity when England lose possession?
These are the questions he will need to answer through his performances rather than words.
The midfielder also has to maintain his physical condition.
Mainoo’s recent international experience has included frustration surrounding his fitness. During the 2026 World Cup, he ultimately did not feature, while Tuchel later explained that a back problem had prevented him from playing in England’s third-place play-off.
Staying fit and available could therefore be another important part of his attempt to become a regular international starter.
For Manchester United supporters, however, there are reasons to remain optimistic.
Mainoo is still young and has already accumulated significant experience at both club and international level. England’s decision to keep him involved shows that Tuchel continues to see potential in him.
The midfielder does not need to become a completely different player.
Instead, he needs to become a more complete and consistent version of himself.
He must become more assertive when England have possession, improve his influence over matches and demonstrate that he can handle the intensity of international football on a regular basis.
The competition is unlikely to disappear.
Bellingham, Rice and Anderson are all capable of demanding starting positions, while other English midfielders will continue to emerge.
That means Mainoo’s pathway to becoming an automatic starter will not be easy.
But Tuchel’s message can also be interpreted as an opportunity.
The England manager has not said that Mainoo is finished or that he does not belong in his plans. Instead, the message is that the midfielder must continue developing and earn his opportunity.
For Mainoo, that could become the motivation he needs.
He has already experienced the disappointment of watching an entire major tournament from the sidelines despite being selected in the squad. Rather than allowing that frustration to damage his confidence, he now has the opportunity to use it as fuel.
Every strong performance for Manchester United can strengthen his case.
Every consistent run of matches can increase his chances.
Every improvement in his defensive work, passing, physicality and attacking contribution can make it harder for Tuchel to leave him out.
England’s recent results also show that competition for places is becoming increasingly intense. The Three Lions have responded strongly in the Nations League, including a 7-0 victory over Croatia and consecutive wins against Czechia, while Tuchel has praised the team’s commitment and attitude.
That makes Mainoo’s challenge even clearer.
He is not competing for a place in a struggling England side desperate for solutions. He is competing for a place in a team that already possesses considerable depth and believes it can challenge for major trophies.
That is why Tuchel’s warning should not necessarily be viewed as criticism.
It is a challenge.
Mainoo has already shown enough to remain in the conversation. Now he has to demonstrate that he deserves to move from being an England squad option to becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.
The next stage of his career will therefore be crucial.
If he can remain fit, establish himself consistently at Manchester United and add greater authority to his performances, there is every chance that Tuchel will eventually have to give him a bigger role.
But until that happens, competition will remain fierce.
