BREAKING: Erling Haaland admits Lisandro Martinez is the most difficult…..see more

Erling Haaland has reportedly admitted that Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez is the most difficult defender he has faced during his career, in a statement that has immediately generated huge reaction among football fans.

The Manchester City striker has faced some of the finest defenders in world football since establishing himself as one of the most feared goalscorers in Europe. From experienced Premier League centre-backs to Champions League defenders and international stars, Haaland has rarely struggled to impose himself because of his combination of strength, pace, movement and finishing ability.

However, Lisandro Martínez has emerged as a particularly difficult opponent for the Norwegian striker.

The Argentine defender has never been intimidated by Haaland’s enormous physical presence. Despite the obvious difference in height and physical profile between the two players, Martínez has consistently attempted to compete with the City striker through positioning, aggression, anticipation and his ability to read attacking situations before they develop.

Haaland’s comments would therefore represent a major compliment to the Manchester United defender, particularly because the Norwegian has competed against some of the world’s most respected defenders throughout his career.

Martínez’s reputation has been built around his aggressive defending and his willingness to challenge attackers regardless of their reputation. His style is based less on simply relying on physical size and more on timing his challenges, closing down opponents quickly and making life uncomfortable for forwards.

That approach has often made his battles with Haaland fascinating.

On paper, Haaland possesses almost every physical advantage. The Norwegian is significantly taller, stronger and one of the quickest forwards in world football. His ability to use his body to protect the ball makes him extremely difficult to defend against, especially when he receives crosses or through balls inside the penalty area.

Martínez, however, has shown that defending against Haaland is not simply about matching him physically.

The Argentine has repeatedly tried to prevent Haaland from receiving the ball comfortably in dangerous areas. Instead of waiting for the striker to attack the penalty area, Martínez has looked to anticipate passes, compete aggressively for the first ball and prevent Haaland from turning towards goal.

That tactical battle has helped create one of the most interesting individual matchups in the Manchester derby.

The rivalry became particularly memorable during United’s 2–0 victory over Manchester City at Old Trafford in January 2026. Martínez played a major role in United’s defensive performance as Haaland was unable to make the expected impact, with City failing to score. BBC Sport reported that Martínez helped United keep Haaland under control during the match.

The result was particularly significant because Martínez had been mocked before the match because of the enormous difference in size between himself and Haaland. Former Manchester United midfielders Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt had questioned whether the Argentine could cope with the Norwegian striker’s physicality.

Instead, Martínez answered the criticism on the pitch.

His performance demonstrated why judging a defender purely by height or strength can be misleading. Martínez has developed a reputation for compensating for his smaller frame with determination, anticipation and aggressive positioning.

The battle also highlighted something important about Haaland’s game.

Although the City striker is often capable of overpowering defenders, his effectiveness depends heavily on the service he receives and his ability to find space. When a defender prevents him from establishing a comfortable position inside the penalty area, his influence can become considerably more difficult to maintain.

That is where Martínez’s defensive qualities become particularly important.

Rather than allowing Haaland to dictate the contest physically, Martínez attempts to make the striker uncomfortable from the beginning. He challenges for loose balls, tracks his movement and tries to prevent him from getting the kind of space required to unleash his powerful finishing.

For a striker like Haaland, that can be extremely frustrating.

The Norwegian has previously spoken about the importance of movement and the quality of service he receives. During an earlier interview, he explained that a perfectly delivered pass combined with the correct run can be almost impossible for a defender to stop.

That makes the role of defenders such as Martínez even more important.

If Martínez can read Haaland’s movement before the pass arrives, he can disrupt the sequence before the striker gets the opportunity to finish.

The admiration between the two players also makes their rivalry more interesting.

Martínez has never appeared to fear Haaland. Even when facing a striker considerably taller than himself, he has continued to approach the contest with the same aggressive mentality he brings against every other opponent.

Haaland, meanwhile, has faced many defenders capable of making his life difficult. Earlier in his career, he famously described Virgil van Dijk as the toughest defender he had faced, praising the Liverpool centre-back’s height, strength, speed and timing.

That makes any reported praise for Martínez particularly significant.

The Argentine’s qualities are very different from those of Van Dijk. While Van Dijk can use his size and physical strength to dominate aerial and physical battles, Martínez relies heavily on anticipation, aggression and his ability to attack the ball.

In many ways, that difference demonstrates how difficult defending Haaland can be.

There is no single formula for stopping him.

Some defenders attempt to match his physicality. Others attempt to deny him space. Some rely on pace to recover when he makes runs behind the defence. Martínez’s approach is based on making the striker uncomfortable and refusing to allow him to dictate the contest.

That mentality has made him a particularly interesting opponent for Haaland.

The Manchester derby has also added another layer to their individual rivalry. Every meeting between United and City places enormous pressure on both players because of the significance of the fixture.

For Haaland, the objective is always straightforward: score goals and help City dominate the game.

For Martínez, the challenge is the opposite: prevent Haaland from finding the opportunities that could decide the match.

Their contrasting objectives have produced some fascinating encounters.

The Argentine’s ability to stay close to Haaland without becoming overly aggressive is particularly important. One mistimed challenge against a striker of Haaland’s quality can result in a dangerous free-kick, penalty or clear scoring opportunity.

Martínez therefore has to balance aggression with discipline.

That balance is one of the reasons his performances against elite forwards have attracted so much attention.

Haaland’s physical characteristics can make defenders retreat, but Martínez has often done the opposite. He is prepared to step forward and challenge the striker rather than simply allowing him to receive the ball.

That confidence has become a defining feature of his defensive game.

For Manchester United supporters, the reported praise from Haaland would also represent a significant endorsement of Martínez’s importance to the team.

The defender has experienced criticism during his time at United, particularly when injuries and inconsistent team performances have affected his rhythm. Yet his strongest displays have repeatedly reminded supporters why the club invested heavily in bringing him from Ajax.

His ability to compete against elite attackers remains one of his biggest strengths.

And if Haaland really does regard Martínez as his most difficult opponent, it would provide another fascinating chapter in their growing rivalry.

The Norwegian striker remains one of the most dangerous goalscorers in football, while Martínez continues to establish himself as one of the defenders most willing to confront the biggest attacking threats.

Their contrasting styles make every meeting unpredictable.

Haaland wants to use his power, movement and finishing ability to destroy defensive structures.

Martínez wants to prevent him from ever finding the freedom to do so.

That battle is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

With Manchester United and Manchester City continuing to compete for major honours, the confrontation between Haaland and Martínez could become one of the defining individual duels of the Premier League era.

For Haaland, facing Martínez is not simply another battle against a centre-back.

It is a tactical challenge against a defender who refuses to be intimidated by his reputation, physical strength or goalscoring record.

And for Martínez, stopping Haaland represents an opportunity to prove once again that elite defending is not determined by height alone.

If the reported admission is accurate, Haaland’s words would therefore be one of the strongest compliments Martínez could receive from an opposing attacker.

The City striker has faced defenders from across Europe and competed against some of the biggest names in the game. Yet the Argentine’s aggressive style, intelligence and determination have apparently made him one of the opponents Haaland respects most.

For football fans, that can only make their next meeting even more fascinating.
